Jets girls hold off Red Devils to advance
PAINESDALE — Taylor Heinonen scored 19 points as the Jeffers Jets girls basketball team earned a win their Division 3 District 65 quarterfinal game against the Ironwood Red Devils, 56-53. With the win, the Jets advance to face the Calumet Copper Kings Wednesday in Calumet.
Taylor Heinonen had just one three in the first half, and it was her lone basket of the first quarter. Montanna Heinonen took over the offense, scoring a 3-pointer and two other baskets as the Jets scored 22 in the first quarter.
Defensively, the Jets held the Red Devils to just 15 points.
Montanna Heinonen had just two more baskets in the game to finish with 12 points.
The Red Devils were paced by Hanna Vaughn, who scored 24 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, including back-to-back threes in the third quarter. Jaelyn Novascone added 17.
Taylor Heinonen went to the free throw line four times in the final eight minutes making 6-of-8 to help the Jets hold off a 15-point push from Ironwood in the quarter.
