Calumet Insight Eyecare 10U finishes second at state tournament

CALUMET — Over the weekend, the Calumet Insight Eyecare 10U B hockey team finished second at the state tournament downstate. Calumet finished 2-1 in pool play, which qualified them for semifinal play, where they earned a win to get to the championship game on Sunday.

While they did not win the title, they represented the Copper Country en route to a runner-up finish.

In the “American” pool, Calumet bounced back from a loss in their tournament opener to earn a spot in the semifinals with a pair of wins.

They opened the tournament with a game against Petoskey Northmen (White). In the game, they got three goals from Clark Sturos. Sturos also added an assist on Matthew Corrigan’s goal, however Calumet ultimately fell, 5-4.

In their second game, they took on the Dearborn Mustangs, whom they defeated 8-1.

Corrigan led the offense, scoring four times and adding a pair of assists. Sturos added two goals and an assist as well.

Tuuka Karstu scored two goals and an assist as well. Andy Anderson, Caiden Grant and Timber Dessellier all earned assists as well.

In their third game, Calumet took on the Livonia Knights (Red) team, and again came away with a big win, 7-1.

Corrigan led the way again with five goals. Sturos and Karstu scored the two other goals. Anderson had an assist in the game as well.

That meant that Calumet finished second in the American Pool behind Petoskey (White), who went 3-0 in pool play. On the other side of the ledger, the Lakeshore Lumberjacks (Black) and Big Boy 10U advanced from the “National” pool.

Calumet had to face Lakeshore in semifinal play. They won, 5-2.

Sturos scored three times in the contest. Karstu added a goal and an assist. Corrigan scored the other tally.

Petoskey won the other semifinal game, setting the stage for a rematch for the championship. While Karstu and Corrigan each scored for Calumet, they could not keep Petoskey off the board, as the Northmen scored 12 in a 12-2 win.
