Multiple Gremlins swimmers honored after UP Finals
MARQUETTE — The Houghton Gremlins swim teams had five boys and one girl honored with All-UP honors for their efforts this season.
For the boys, Beau Haataja, John Bennett, and Collin Raasio earned spots for their swim performances while Isaac Neva and Evan Massaway earned honors for diving. For the girls, Stella Soumis was honored.
Along with the six swimmers, coach Erik Johnson earned Coach of the Year honors.
“Both teams swam extremely well, supported each other throughout the entire meet, and really left a positive impact on the program,” said Johnson. “We had contributions from everyone, and the coaching staff is extremely proud of how the team finished out the season.”
The Gremlins girls took third at the U.P. Finals, which included podium finishes from Meg Ruohonen (fifth) in diving, Naomi Frahm (sixth) in diving, Aya Keteri (fifth) in the 200-meter freestyle, Rose Dennis (sixth) in the 200-meter individual medley, Evelyn LaTendresse (fourth) in the 100-meter butterfly and (fifth) in the 100-meter freestyle.
The relay teams of Soumis, Keteri, Dennis and LaTendresse took third in both the 200-meter freestyle, and the 400-meter freestyle.
On the boys’ side, the Gremlins finished second behind Marquette.
Neva (second) and Massaway (third) both reached the podium in diving.
Raasio won the 200-meter freestyle and finished second in the 500-meter freestyle. Haataja finished as the winner of the 100-meter backstroke, and took third in the 100-meter freestyle.
Brett Gaff took fourth in the 200-meter individual medley and in the 100-meter butterfly. Josh Bennett placed third in the 50-meter freestyle and fourth in the 100-meter freestyle. Anderson Limkemann finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke.
In the relays, the 200-meter medley team of Kameron Johnson, Limkemann, Massaway and Tate Evans took fourth, the 200-meter freestyle team of Haataja, Gaff, Bennett and Raasio placed second, and the 400-meter freestyle team of Haataja, Gaff, Bennett and Raasio won the event.
