CALUMET — The Keweenaw Roller Derby is thrilled to announce the launch of its New Skater Program, which offers an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in learning the fast-paced, high-energy sport of roller derby.

Whether you’re an experienced skater, or brand new to the sport, this program provides the skills and confidence to roll with the best.

“This program is the perfect way to get started in roller derby,” said coach Melissa Williamson, also known as Melissious Intent. “We focus on skill-building, confidence, and community. It’s not just about skating — it’s about being part of a team and pushing yourself in new ways.”

The program is open to all individuals ages 18 and up who want to learn the fundamentals of roller derby, including skating techniques, safety, and teamwork. No prior experience is necessary — just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Keweenaw Roller Derby’s experienced skaters will guide participants through structured training sessions designed to build skills progressively in a fun and supportive environment.

Participants will have access to loaner gear if needed, and each session will focus on developing safe skating techniques, falls, stops. As they progress, skaters will have the opportunity to join Keweenaw Roller Derby’s team, and become a full league member.

The program kicks off from 12-1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at Jeffers High School, in Painsdale, with sessions running every Sunday for six weeks.

A meet and greet session will be held Sunday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m. at the school. This session will give potential new skaters the opportunity to try on gear and ask questions about the team and upcoming program.
