Mine Shaft senior men and women bowlers win big
HOUGHTON — Well over 100 bowlers descended upon the Mine Shaft this past weekend for the 33rd Annual UP All-Star Bowling Tournament.
The two-day event featured five Upper Peninsula teams or houses from the region. Among them were men’s and women’s teams from Miller Lanes in Laurium, Loggers’ Alley in Bruce Crossing, Whirl-I-Gig Lanes in L’Anse, and River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming.
The bowlers competed in two divisions for both men and women. In the senior division (over age 50), both the Mine Shaft’s men and women teams defeated Miller Lanes for the trophies.
In the majors division (under age 50), Miller Lanes’s men beat the Mine Shaft and the River Rock Lanes’ women beat Miller Lanes.
“For us to host this is a big deal,” said Bob Massicotte, the manager at the Mine Shaft bowling alley. “It is a fun weekend. There is a lot of competition with a lot of good bowlers. You have to be on top of your game.”
Tammy Ecklund of Miller Lanes in was in agreement on the need to be on top of your game.
“From the first night of league play in the fall you are thinking about qualifying for this all-star tournament,” she said. “Typically, the five top averages in league play make the team.”
“This is a big weekend with a lot of bragging rights on the line,” Massicotte added.
As well, there is the fun part. Amanda Tober, of the Mine Shaft team, said she loves the tournament and looks forward to it every year.
“It is always a good time,” she said. “There is good camaraderie among the bowlers. We are like family.”
