Copper Kings advance with win over Red Devils
CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings volleyball team earned a trip to the D3 Region 17 semifinals in Gwinn thanks to a sweep of the Ironwood Red Devils Friday night at the Calumet Gym, 25-12, 25-15, and 25-18.
The Copper Kings will face Manistique in their semifinal matchup Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Allie Bjorn led the way for the Copper Kings offensive with 18 kills and 12 digs. Jackie Kiilunen also had a big evening, racking up 12 kills and 13 digs.
Sienna Anderson added five kills and led the service game with three aces. Chloe Coppo was also strong with three kills and two aces.
Bella Coppo distriubuted the ball well with 30 assists.
Calumet is now 28-4-2 on the season and have won seven matches in a row dating back to Oct. 19 when they topped Crystal Falls Forest Park in three sets.
They will face an Emeralds squad that is 15-11-6 on season, and has overcome a 3-6-3 start to the year.
They have won three matches in a row, defeating Sault Ste. Marie, Cheboygan, Escanaba, Menoominee, and Iron Mountain.
The winner Tuesday advances to the regional final Thursday in St. Igance against the winner of Indian River Inland Lakes and Traverse City St. Francis.
