PAINESDALE — It was Parents’ Night at Jeffers High School Monday, and the Jets volleyball players gave their parents a night to remember. They swung their way to a 3-1 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-17).

“It was big night for our seniors,” said Jets coach Rachel Sondergrath. “I wanted to make sure I got everybody in, and I did.”

The Lakes set the tone by winning the first set in comeback fashion. After falling behind 10-14, the Lakes knotted this one at 18 and again at 22 before earning the set win.

The second was another close one with the Lakes falling behind at 14-4 and coming back to within two courtesy of Emily Burnham. She posted a run of eight to move the score from 14-5 to 14-12. Then, with teammate Alli Corrigan serving up back-to-back aces, the set was knotted at 15 and again at 16.

It stayed close with ties at 19, 20 and 21 before the Jets moved ahead for good, tying the match.

In the third set the Lakes took a commanding 6-3 lead but could not maintain it. With the Jets’ Montanna Heinonen on the service line, the score shifted to a Jeffers’ 12-7 lead, and the Jets just kept flying. Sammi Pennala posted a service run of four which included one of three of her aces, and the Jets landed this set at 25-19.

“We wanted to get them out of system, and we did,” noted Sondergrath.

That was very evident by the fourth set as the Jets jumped out to a 10-7 lead and wore the Lakes out with a constant barrage of offense.

Mia Norstrom led the Jets with 13 kills, and Pennala spiked nine. Set four ended 25-17 and earned a match win for the Jets.

This was the second meeting between these two conference rivals. While the outcome was the same, Lakes’ coach Joslynn Perala said her girls did play better this time around.

“Jeffers is scrappy, and they wore us down,” she stated. “We played very good defense but could not terminate the ball on offense. They were seemingly one step ahead of us all night.”
