Eight former Huskies at NHL training camps
HOUGHTON — Eight former Michigan Tech Huskies hockey players are at NHL Training Camps that began this week. The NHL regular season starts on Oct. 4.
Arvid Caderoth – Los Angeles Kings
Arvid Caderoth (Gothenburg, Sweden) signed with Fort Wayne in the ECHL in April and was traded to the Greenville Swamprabbits in the offseason. He will attend LA Kings Training Camp as an invitee. He played with the Kings at the 2024 NHL Rookie Faceoff last week, scoring one goal and began his pro career with four games for Fort Wayne at the end of last season.
Caderoth skated in 140 games for the Huskies over the past four seasons and tallied 56 points with 15 goals and 41 assists. The two-time captain scored six game-winning goals and six power-play goals. He scored a career-best seven goals as a senior and was a CCHA Scholar-Athlete and member of the CCHA All-Academic Team. He was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team as a freshman after leading conference newcomers with 18 points and 16 assists.
Pheonix Copley – Los Angeles Kings
Pheonix Copley (North Pole, Alaska) re-signed with the LA Kings in the offseason and begins his 11th professional season. He played eight games for the Kings last season before an injury. In his career, Copley has appeared in 76 NHL games for St. Louis, Washington, and LA with a 44-16-8 record and a 2.83 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. He raised the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018. Copley has also appeared in 237 AHL games.
Copley played two seasons for Michigan Tech from 2012-14, winning 18 games with four shutouts. He was twice named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week in 2013-14 and in 2012-13 was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week twice, the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week once, and the MVP of the Great Lakes Invitational after a pair of shutouts to lift the Huskies to their first GLI title in 32 years.
Brian Halonen – New Jersey Devils
Brian Halonen (Delano, Minnesota) begins his third full season of professional hockey and signed another two-year NHL contract with New Jersey in July. He skated in two NHL games last season and has played 104 career AHL games, tallying 62 points (39 goals, 23 assists).
Halonen played 139 games for the Huskies from 2018-22 and is 59th in career points with 105. He was named a Hobey Baker Top 10 Finalist, a Second Team All-American, and to the All-CCHA First Team after he tallied a career-high 44 points in 37 games during the 2021-22 season. He was on the All-WCHA Rookie Team in 2018-19.
Michael Karow – Dallas Stars
Michael Karow (Green Bay, Wisconsin) is attending Dallas Stars Training Camp. Karow has played 117 AHL games over the past three seasons for Texas, tallying 32 points with five goals and 27 assists. He has also skated in three games for the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL.
Karow transferred to Michigan Tech to play a fifth season and skated in all 37 games for the Huskies in 2021-22. He tallied a career-high 10 points with two goals and eight assists and was +13. Karow helped anchor a Tech defense that ranked third in the nation in penalty-killing percentage and fourth in scoring defense. He played four seasons at Boston College before coming to Houghton.
Jujhar Khaira – Tampa Bay Lightning
Jujhar Khaira (Surrey, British Columbia) recently signed an AHL contract with the Syracuse Crunch and will attend Tampa Bay Lightning Training Camp. He enters his 12th season of pro hockey and has appeared in 337 NHL games for Edmonton, Chicago, and Minnesota. Khaira has tallied 33 goals and 47 assists at the NHL level.
Khaira tallied six goals and 19 assists for 25 points in his only season with the Huskies in 2012-13. He finished tied for fourth on the team in scoring and played in all 37 games. He was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week on November 20 after leading Tech to a pair of overtime wins at Bemidji State with two goals and an assist.
Jake Lucchini – Nashville Predators
Jake Lucchini (Trail, British Columbia) signed to a two-year, two-way contact with Nashville in July and will attend Predators Training Camp. Lucchini played 40 NHL games for the Minnesota Wild last season, tallying five points with two goals and three assists. He has skated in 51 career NHL games with the Wild and Ottawa Senators. Entering his sixth pro season, Lucchini has also played 267 AHL games with 160 points (70 goals, 90 assists).
Lucchini never missed a game in his Tech career, skating in 164 contests. He led all active college players in the category and finished one game short of tying a Tech record. Lucchini was the 66th player in Tech history to reach 100 career points, finishing with 104 points on 45 goals and 59 assists. As a senior, he co-captained the Huskies and led the team in points with 26 on 11 goals and 15 assists. Lucchini was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team as a freshman.
Logan Pietila – Pittsburgh Penguins
Logan Pietila (Howell, Michigan) signed an AHL contract with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and will attend Pittsburgh Penguins Training Camp. He skated in three games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the end of last season.
Pietila appeared in 180 games for the Huskies over five seasons (2019-24), tying the all-time games played record. The two-time captain tallied 98 career points with 45 goals and 53 assists, registering 20 points in four of his five seasons. He scored 13 game-winning goals and six power-play goals in his career. As a senior, Pietila tallied a career-best 29 points with 13 goals and 16 assists.
Matt Roy – Washington Capitals
Matt Roy (Canton, Michigan) signed a six-year NHL contract with the Washington Capitals in the offseason and will enter his eighth pro season. He has played in 369 NHL games with the LA Kings and has 24 goals and 82 assists. Roy was drafted by the Kings in the 2015 NHL Draft after his freshman season at Tech.
Roy played 115 games over three seasons (2014-17) with the Huskies, recording 55 points on 12 goals and 43 assists before signing after his junior season on March 27, 2017. Roy was Tech’s team leader in assists with 21 as a junior and had the assist on the game-winning goal six times. He was a two-time All-WCHA selection.
