LAKE LINDEN — By their play in the field, and their aggressiveness at the plate, one would struggle to believe that the ladies of the Tervo Agency had no real practice on the softball field before their opener on Monday night. They downed Gold Standard 6-4 in a complete-game win the Boneyard.
“We trusted each other. Olivia (Wakeham) knew that her fielders had her as she pitched well,” stated player-coach Danielle Thoune. “It was an exciting way to start the season.”
Gold Standard (1-1) jumped on the scoreboard first with a 2-1 lead after one. However, it was a short one as Tervo tied it in the second.
Aubrey Zackal got on with a base hit and scored on a fielder’s choice several batters later. It was now tied at two.
That is how the game stayed until the fifth as Wakeham and Gold Standard’s hurler Lena Myhren battled it out from the pitcher’s circle.

In the fifth, Wakeham helped her own cause with a leadoff double and scored on a Cassidy Albrecht single. Albrecht scored as well on a misplayed ball, making it a 4-2 game in favor of Tervo.
The shortstop, Albrecht, had another RBI hit in the top of the seventh which led to two more runs scoring and now a four-run lead.
While Gold Standard did score two runs in the seventh it would not be enough, and this one ended 6-4.
Wakeham went the distance striking out nine Gold Standard batters along the way for the win.
“Our hitting wasn’t there tonight,” said Gold Standard’s coach Curtis Kinnunen. “Also, a couple of errors in the field hurt us.”
In other women’s softball action on Monday, JB’s Sales and Service “mercied” Superior National Bank 12-2 after five innings. Sadie Biekkola earned the win for JB’s with six strikeouts and issuing just one walk.
Biekkola also swung a big bat as she and teammate Brynn Arko hit home runs over the fence to add to the win.
