Top of their class: Lakes’ Jokela, Calumet’s Strom earn All-UP 1st Team honors
MARQUETTE — Earlier this month, the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association met in Marquette to cast their votes on their annual girls basketball player-and-team awards. A number of Copper Country players earned accolades. Among them was Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Emily Jokela, who was named to the Division 4 First Team.
She has also been named a 2023-24 Michigan All-State honoree as well as this year’s Copper Mountain Conference Player of the Year.
In February, Jokela became the Lakes all-time basketball scoring leader (boys and girls) and finished her season with 1,438 career points, while being just a junior. She led the Lakes to a Copper Mountain Conference title this season (23-2) averaging close to 23 points a game. She shot 52% from the field and 33% from beyond the three-point arc.
“We would not be where we are without Emily,” said her coach Jack Kumpula. “She’s our leader in so many ways and has been for the past three years.”
Calumet’s Caitlyn Strom earned a spot on the Division 1-3 First Team for her efforts as one of two upperclassmen on the Copper Kings’ roster. The senior averaged more than 18 points per game and is set to play at University of Wisconsin-Platteville (NCAA Division III) next season.
“Caitlyn has carried the load on both ends of the floor,” said her coach, Charlie Kemppainen, who summed up Strom’s past season. “She was one of just two seniors (we had) this year. Her leadership has made a huge impact in the development of our young players. She is a special player.”
