Copper Kings volleyball wins fourth consecutive regional title
MANISTIQUE — The Calumet Copper Kings took care of business here Thursday night, earning their fourth consecutive MHSAA Division 3 regional volleyball championship in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-18) victory over the Roscommon Bucks.
Calumet (19-2) advances to the state quarterfinal match in Sault Ste. Marie where it will face Traverse CIty St. Francis (20-3) Tuesday at 6 p.m. Roscommon finished 26-13.
Senior Caitlyn Strom provided the Copper Kings with a pair of kills through double-blocks for a 16-14 lead midway through the third set.
The Copper Kings trailed 8-3 at one time in the finale.
“Caitlyn is awesome,” Calumet senior libero Gabby Anderson said. “I think those swung the momentum. When they went up 8-3, we just had to calm down and keep our heads up. Winning this regional feels awesome. I’m so excited. I think we just need to keep our energy up in every match and play for every point.”
The Copper Kings took a 13-12 lead on Strom’s first kill in a double-block situation before her next one put them up by two points.
“They gave us a fight in sets two and three for sure,” Copper Kings coach Kate Bonacorsi said. “We had a time-out when it got to 8-3 and told the girls ‘let’s try to beat them to 15’ and they did that. They were trying to slow our attack in the middle and got some blocks, but we were able to hit around them.”
A kill by junior Madelyn Torola gave the Copper Kings a 22-17 cushion in the third.
Calumet committed a service error before getting a sideout on a Bucks’ serving miscue.
The Copper Kings then wrapped up the title on a two-hit violation and a defensive error.
“They got a lot of offense and we’re mostly freshmen and sophomores,” Bucks coach Gabe Williams said. “They have a lot of skill. The girls aren’t used to playing at that speed and hitting five balls into the net in the second set didn’t help. Once we figured things out, we started swinging and did all right. Then, some of the kids started tipping the ball. When we stopped swinging, things didn’t go as well.”
Calumet started its comeback on a kill by Strom whose block tied the score at 12, setting the stage for a strong finish.
In the second frame, Roscommon led 17-16 before a kill a by junior Allison Bjorn tied the score.
The Copper Kings gained a 20-17 lead on another kill by Bjorn.
Roscommon trimmed its deficit to two points on a kill by sophomore Alexis Carper before the Copper Kings pulled away to secure that set on a defensive miscue.
Calumet took charge early in the first, gaining a 14-4 advantage on an ace by Anderson.
A kill by Carper enabled the Bucks to climb within 14-9 before a nine-point service run by Strom put the opener out of reach.
Strom served for four aces and finished with six kills. Bjorn led the Copper Kings at the net with 12 kills. Kiilunen added nine and Anderson had a 2.5 serve receive rating.
