Tech volleyball receives USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Michigan Tech volleyball team received the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for 2022-23, earning the honor for the 11th straight season. Tech held a 3.5 team GPA and was one of eight GLIAC teams honored.

Twelve Huskies were named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team while two others were on the GLIAC All-Academic Team. Carissa Beyer received a GLIAC Commissioner’s Award after being named the All-GLIAC First Team and holding a 3.63 GPA. Lindy Oujiri and Riley Stichter held a 4.0 for the academic year, while Janie Grindland, Kaycee Meiners, Meg Raabe, and Morgan Radtke each had a 4.0 semester.

Tech finished the 2022 season with a 20-10 overall record, winning 20 matches for the fifth time under Jennings. Four Huskies earned all-conference honors as Carissa Beyer was named to the All-GLIAC First Team, Lina Espejo-Ramirez, and Jillian Kuizenga were named to the All-GLIAC Second Team, and Janie Grindland was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.

More than 1,300 collegiate and high school volleyball teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award this season. This marks an all-time record number of programs honored for their academic achievements. The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.

“The commitment our coaches make to help their student-athletes pursue the best versions of themselves is evident in the academic accomplishments highlighted today,” said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. “Achievement on the court has always been closely tied to success in the classroom which is reflected by the number of championship programs honored.”
