HOUGHTON — With 44 points in the second half, the Michigan Tech Huskies men’s basketball team earned their second win of the season over the No. 20 Ferris State Bulldogs, 75-63, Thursday night at the SDC Gym in Houghton.
Even more impressive than the fact that the Huskies swept the regular season series with the Bulldogs for the first time in at least a dozen years, they did it with leading scorer Marcus Tomashek not scoring a single field goal.
“Somebody said it’s been about 12 years,” Huskies coach Josh Buettner said. “They’ve been the standard of the league for a while here. So, that just shows that we have a chance to be a pretty good team.”
Buettner loved how hard his team worked throughout the game.
“(I) thought our competitive level was pretty good tonight,” he said. “I thought we defended at a high level to get a win. With Marcus not making a field goal, that’s pretty special.”
Tomashek scored 45 points in an 88-85 overtime win by the Huskies in Big Rapids earlier this season.
“I was really happy with how Marcus played, six assists, 11 rebounds, didn’t force it,” Buettner said. “That’s a sign of a really good player as well.
“Credit to Mark for getting the ball to guys, but, (Adam) Hobson, (Josh) Terrian, both making four threes, that’s huge, (Matt) Schmainda, making two, Pete (Calcaterra), Gabe (Smith), ‘Dodge’ (Dawson Nordgaard) getting some stuff inside, painting a couple buckets inside.”
Having scoring balance was key, especially considering the Huskies had three players in double figures and two others within two points of also being in double digits.
“I think we had 35 points from the bench, and that’s awesome,” Buettner said. “We talk about that. You like to count on that on the road, but at home, we really do need to count on that at home. We rely on Marcus probably too much sometimes on the road, but when we’re in our own gym, we have some confident guys shooting it.”
Hobson, a senior, led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points. Smith followed with 14, and Terrian had 12.
Hobson and Terrian finished with four threes each. Terrian had two in the first half and hit two more in the second.
“(I was) just shooting with confidence,” said Terrian. “Last weekend on the road, (I) didn’t shoot at all that great. (I) wasn’t too happy with my performance. Monday morning, came in shot with Coach (Zach) Flener. He does an excellent job with all of our players, just working through our shots. We worked on some things, got my confidence back, and today, once I saw that first one go down, (I) just had a lot of confidence out there.”
Terrian, a junior, has been a part of Huskies teams that won 10 games when he was a freshman, and 11 as a sophomore. With the win Thursday, the Huskies are 17-6 overall, and 12-3 in GLIAC play.
“It means a lot,” he said. “This core group, we’ve been through a lot. Obviously, the last two years, we haven’t won a lot of games, and this year, kind of turning the corner and just beating some of these good teams, and playing well while we do it.
“The last couple years, (we) just faced some adversity, but that’s what’s made this year so special. We still got a lot more games to play, and it’s kind of crazy just how close the conference is. We’re a few games right in the first place, and a few games away from hosting a conference tournament (game), in the first round. So, every game matters. Coach ‘Buetts’ does an excellent job of preaching every possession matters so much, every box out, and we just have to play hard for 40 minutes, and only focus on that game.”
Hobson, a senior, went 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. Schmainda, a sophomore, hit a pair of key threes in the first half.
Calcaterra, a senior guard, and Nordgaard, a junior forward, finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
