In our opinion

A Daily Mining Gazette Editorial

Every weekday this month, the Daily Mining Gazette has featured the work of a young artist on our front page. These works were selected from among the more than 300 pieces in a variety of media currently on display at the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. This is a continuation of a cooperative agreement between the CCCAC and the DMG that’s been going on for more than 20 years.

We are grateful to be able to share just a fraction of the talent that exists in our Copper Country Schools. We’ve displayed works by students from Kindergarten through senior year of high school. Some of these pieces could easily be displayed in professional galleries while others will enjoy a place of honor on the family refrigerator.

Whether it’s at a concert, recital, play or gallery, we are constantly impressed with the talent of the youth of the Keweenaw. We are equally impressed with the passion and devotion of the public school teachers who help nurture and cultivate their talent.

Special thanks to Bonnie Loukus of the CCCAC for her work in providing the works of art you’ve been enjoying on our pages throughout the month. We could only be a part of this special ongoing endeavor with Bonnie’s efforts.

It is said that all good things must come to an end, and such is the case with the Young Artist Exhibition at the CCCAC closes tomorrow. On the bright side, it does give us all a day or so to take in this immense array of talent. Keep in mind, what you’ve been enjoying on our front page is less than 10 percent of what can be seen in person should you visit the art center’s gallery.

While it’s great to Celebrate Youth Arts Month each March, the works of our talented students should be cherished all year long. As we head into spring, we’ll all have the opportunity to watch plays, enjoy concerts and recitals and enjoy so much of what makes our area a treasure.

Starting at $2.99/week.
