Shannon Maria Kilpela
DOLLAR BAY — Shannon Maria Kilpela, 61, a resident of Dollar Bay, passed away on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
She was born on March 28, 1963, in Detroit, a daughter of the late Robert and Maria (Storm) Sturos. Shannon was raised in Laurium and was a graduate of the Calumet High School with the class of 1981.
She resided in Cokato, Minnesota, while raising her five children. Shannon then returned to make her home in the Copper Country and was united in marriage to Daniel Kilpela on Feb. 27, 2014. Since 2017, the couple has made their home in Dollar Bay.
For 25 years Shannon worked as an RN for Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and continued commuting back and forth after her move to the Copper Country. She was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton. Shannon was an active person and enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, and shopping to find a good deal. She always enjoyed a cup of coffee while visiting with her family and friends. No distance was too great for her when it came to her children and grandchildren. She was known to travel across continents to be there for their activities and milestones, always offering her love and support.
Surviving are: Her husband: Daniel Kilpela of Dollar Bay. Her children: Miranda (Carl) Heinonen of Hancock; Megan (Brad) Daavettila of Fowlerville, Michigan; Mark Koivisto of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Karl (Brita) Koivisto of St. Michael, Minnesota; Tyler (Jane) Koivisto of Buffalo, Minnesota. Her 11 grandsons and seven granddaughters, Daniel’s children: Jessica (Luke) Edwards of Marquette; Travis (Rea) Kilpela of Chassell; Maria (TJ) Palosaari of Houghton; Gina (Kevin) Kunkel of Chassell. His six grandsons and two granddaughters. Her siblings: Paul (Elaine), Peter (Sue), Phillip (Danita), David (Renee), Kurt (Katy), Michael, Martha (Bill), Gretchen (James), Johnny (Maria) Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service for Shannon will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton with Mark Halonen to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery of Calumet.
Friends and family may come on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Houghton and on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
