Russell J. Barger

WHITE PINE – Russell J. Barger of White Pine passed away on Jan. 1, 2025 in Wakefield at the Gogebic Medical Care Facility, he was 87 years old.
Russell was born to Jim and Adrian (Sarazin)Barger on Nov. 5, 1937, in Chassell. He graduated from Chassell High School in 1957. He joined the Army National Guard and then enlisted in the United States Army. Upon returning from the Army, he worked for Hocking Construction Company. He then met and married Betty Jean Archambeau on November 12, 1960.
They moved to White Pine where Russell was employed with The White Pine Copper Mine for 39 years and retired in 2000. Russell was involved with many groups in the area. He was a founder of the Mine Union, a lifetime member of the VFW (Past commander), the American Legion Post 462, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Monday Night Bowlers League, the local Fire Dept. (past chief) a dedicated union member Local 5024, and a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church where he had served as an usher and greeter through the years.
Russell loved to spend time with his family and also enjoyed attending many car shows.
He is survived by his wife Betty, of 63 years; his children Larry and (Kathy) Barger of Tonotah, Nevada, Kathy and (Shawn) Hayes of Minnetrista, Minnesota, and Mary Jo and (Jim) Maki of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; along with nine precious grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Adrian Barger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Parkinson’s & ALS Research Team.
In grateful appreciation to the staff at the Gogebic Medical Care for their loving care over the past 3 1/2 years to our loved one.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 3, 2025, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in White Pine. Friends and family may gather for visitation from 10 – 11 a.m., with Mass starting at 11 a.m.
