Martin Steinmetz
South Range — Martin A. Steinmetz, 86, a resident of South Range, MI passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the Omega House in Houghton, MI with his family by his side.
He was born on November 15, 1938, in Hancock, MI, a son of the late Anton and Eva (Manderfield) Steinmetz. Marty was raised in West Houghton and attended St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic School.
Mr. Steinmetz had owned and operated Canal Boat Sales with Jim Markham. He then began a career working for Vollwerth & Company retiring as a sales person after 43 years of service to the company. During his retirement, he was a school bus driver for the Adams Township School for 15 years, retiring for a second time at the age of 80.
On February 11, 1972, he was united in marriage to the former JoAnn (Ravasz) Seppala. The couple resided in South Range where they raised their three children.
Mr. Steinmetz was a devout Catholic and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of South Range. He was very active in the community, serving on the South Range Village Council, first as a board member, and then as village president. He also was a past board member for the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association. Martin was one of the founding members of the Range Snowmobile Club and served as a past president. He enjoyed time outdoors snowmobiling during the winter and camping during the summer.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Michael Manderfield.
Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Steinmetz of South Range; his children, Lorrie Graff of Kalamazoo, MI, Gina (Jeff) Goudge of South Range, Todd (Meredith) Steinmetz of Rockwood, MI; his grandchildren, Dana (Gary Brown) Graff, Marissa (Myles) Johnson, Austin (Shea) Goudge, Brayden Goudge, Makayla Steinmetz, Maranda Steinmetz, and Monica Steinmetz; his great-grandchildren, Jade, Brynlee, Dawson, and Caleb; his sister, Beth Zerbst of Houghton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Martin will be held at 12:00 (Noon) on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton with Fr. John Martignon to celebrate.
Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.
Friends may call on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church of Houghton.
