Carl Robert Adams
BLOOMINGTON, Mich. — Carl Robert Adams passed away November 6, 2024, peacefully at his home in Bloomington, MN.
Born in 1940 and raised in Calumet, MI, he was a proud Yooper and respected academic. His mother, Dorothy Vertin Adams, raised Carl and his four older siblings after his father, Robert Adams, died serving in the Pacific. Carl studied applied physics at Michigan Tech, and then earned master’s and PhD degrees from Purdue.
Carl was married to his high school sweetheart, Marlene Bracco, from 1963 until her death in 2017. A memorial scholarship in her name continues to support Calumet students attending Michigan Tech. After a formational experience with the Department of Defense, Carl had a distinguished 43-year career at the University of Minnesota, where he served as long-time department chair and in various leadership positions. He is remembered for his sharp intellect, warm laugh, and thoughtful advice.
Carl is survived by many friends, family, colleagues, and a particularly dear friend, Jan Lynch. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and his siblings, Mary, Bill, Barbara, and John.
Services will be held on December 17 at Pax Christi Catholic Community, 12100 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie. Visitation 10 a.m., Funeral at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Michigan Tech University or a charity of choice.
