Mary Kahler Roy

HANCOCK — Mary Kahler Roy of Hancock passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, with her family by her side.

She was born May 19, 1934, in Hancock, Michigan to Reuben and Lempi Kahler. Mary was a 1951 graduate of Hancock High School. Mary married Rob Roy on December 29, 1955, at St. Joseph-St. Patrick Church in Hancock. They lived in East Lansing, Fort Benning Georgia, and Fort Riley Kansas moving back to Hancock in 1959 to raise their family.

She was employed by the late Stephen Condon, then Prosecuting Attorney for Houghton County for four years. Mary worked at Michigan Technological University for two years. Later was employed by Detroit and Northern Bank for 14 years retiring in 2000. Mary also worked for the Leo H. Roy Insurance Agency in Hancock.

She was active in the local Girl Scouts for 15 years. She was a member of the Houghton-Hancock Business and Professional Women’s Association. Mary was one of the initial organizers of the Hancock Public Schools Alumni Association and was a membership Secretary of the Association having received the Alumni Service Award in 2004 for 30 years of service. She was secretary of the East Hancock Neighborhood Association. Was an associate member of the Portage Health Auxiliary and volunteered at Portage Health and Portage Pointe. She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, having served many years as Eucharistic Minister. The Funeral Lunch Committee and the Prayer Shawl Knitting Group.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Rob, her daughter Robbyn Lucier, her parents, her only sister Nancy, her brother-in-law Robert Leonard, and an infant grandson Gerald Todd Lucier II. She is survived by her children: Chris (Vicky) Roy and Julie (Mark) Maroste; Her son-in-law: Gerald Lucier; Her grandchildren: Jordan (Bri) Roy, Alex (Anica) Roy, Samuel Maroste, Mary Maroste, William Lucier and Elizabeth Lucier; Her Great-grandchildren: Bennett Roy, Everly Roy, Theo Roy, Gianna Roy & Ada Roy.

A Mass of Christina Burial for Mary will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock for Fr. Corey Litzner to Celebrate. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.
