Lawrence Poissant
ISHPEMING — Lawrence “Larry” Poissant, age 92, passed away on August 13, 2024, at home with his loving family by his side.
Larry was born in Tamarack Mills on April 17, 1932, the son of Lawrence and Therese (Trudell) Poissant. He attended kindergarten at the Tamarack School and grade school at St. Cecilia Catholic School in Hubbell. Larry was a 1950 graduate of Dollar Bay High School. He married the love of his life, Joan Hainault on January 12, 1952, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hubbell, after having met in the fourth grade. They were married for 69 love-filled years before Joan went to heaven on January 21, 2021.
Larry was a Navy veteran serving during the Korean War era on the USS Sanborn. He owned and operated the Spanish Shop in Lake Linden, worked at Montgomery Wards and retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company after 35 years of service, managing the Calumet and Houghton stores before transferring to the Marquette store in 1976 and retiring from the Ishpeming store in 1992.
Retirement gave him more time for his passions in this beautiful life – his family, golfing and bowling to name a few. He enjoyed his time spent with the Knights of Columbus, playing card games and cribbage, watching the Packers and Tigers, bringing the Holy Eucharist to homebound parishioners within the church, singing in the church choir with his wife, and warm winters spent in Tucson, Arizona years ago.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, an infant son, Mario, his parents, son-in-law, Steve and a brother, Gerald.
Larry is loved and survived by his children, Laurie (Ed), Kevin, Mickey (Jim), Joe (Shirley), Tim, and Greg (Lisa) along with his grandchildren Eric (Jenni), Stephanie (Todd), Holly (Andy), Abbey (Joe), Adam (Christi), Tom (Gina), Kori (Teddy), Jessey (Maddy), Jestina (Tyler), Brett (Taylor), Robert (Vivian), Alex (Anna) and great-grandchildren Sebastian, Benjamin, Sophia, Jacob, Harper, Joey, Freddy, George, Louis, Clint, Evelyn, Riley, Gabby, Rhyan, Mazie, Jameson and Silas. Also surviving Larry are his sister, Patricia Clements, sister-in-law, Gretchen Hainault, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday with Fr. Larry Van Damme to officiate.
We are grateful for the care given to our Dad by U.P. Home Health & Hospice, especially his nurse Elyssa, but especially grateful to our brother, Tim, who has been our parents’ caregiver his entire life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Joseph Church Memorial Fund in Ishpeming.
