Houghton student suspended for alleged threat
HOUGHTON — A Houghton High School student was suspended through the end of the year at a special meeting earlier this month after allegedly threatening school safety.
Speaking after Monday’s regular meeting, Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Anders Hill did not specify the nature of the threat.
On Nov. 7, the board met to consider disciplinary action for the student. At the request of the student’s parent, the board went into closed session to discuss the issue.
“For student discipline purposes, we have to make a decision in open session,” Hill said. “So the student was expelled, but all the deliberation and everything was done in closed session.”
After the student’s parent requested the closed session, the board discussed the issue in private for 44 minutes. Once it returned to open session, the board voted 6-0 in favor of suspension.
The student will be barred from attending school at Houghton until Sept. 2, 2025.
