100-acre wildfire in Baraga County
USFS crews attacking days long blaze
SUMMIT LAKE — U.S. Forest Service firefighting crews are continuing to attack a wildfire in a remote wilderness area near Summit Lake in L’Anse Township.
The fire, which was about 5 acres when it was reported Friday, grew to about 100 acres, where it has been for the past day, said Shanelle Saunders, acting public affairs officer for the USFS at the Ottawa National Forest. The fire is located in the northwest corner of McCormick Wilderness on the eastern side of Baraga County, near the Marquette County border and about 12 miles from Lake Michigamme.
The fire is now “backing through the forest understory” in a remote wilderness area, Saunders said, which includes both hardwoods and conifers.
Crews are looking for natural barriers and using them to check up the fire, Saunders said. Because the fire is in the wilderness, they are also building strategies around minimum-impact suppression tactics.
Aircraft are also assisting in mapping and other missions, Saunders said.
Most of the smoke seems to be migrating to the northeast because the winds are coming from the southwest, Saunders said.
