4-vehicle crash injures 1 on US 41
State police cite driver distraction
CALUMET — A driver was transported to UP Health System — Portage after a four-vehicle crash in Franklin Township Thursday afternoon.
Driver distraction was a factor in the crash, the MSP said.
The crash occurred about 5:55 p.m. on U.S. 41, where a vehicle was stopped in the northbound lane waiting to turn onto Boston Location Road, the Michigan State Police said in a release Thursday.
A second vehicle was stopped behind the first one. A third vehicle, also northbound, did not see either vehicle. It rear-ended the second vehicle, causing a chain reaction of collisions that led the second vehicle to strike the first vehicle and veer into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane.
The fourth vehicle, driving southbound, was unable to avoid a collision with the second vehicle.
Mercy EMS transported one of the drivers to Portage for treatment, and treated and released all other drivers and passengers on scene.
MSP was assisted by Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock Police Department, Mercy EMS and Dave’s BP Towing.
