Workshop shows seniors how to spot scams

HANCOCK — Seniors can learn how to protect themselves against financial scams at a free workshop this week.

Copper Shores Meals on Wheels and Huntington Bank are hosting the workshops, hosted by Jennifer Rekasi, the bank’s community development relationship manager and vice president for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. They will happen Thursday and Friday.

“So many seniors, and people in general, are just inundated with calls from people you don’t know and asking for things and sounding very convincing and very personable and very real and it’s hard to distinguish what is real and what isn’t,” said Meals on Wheels Director Kathleen Harter. “They prey upon seniors because they maybe have memory issues or signs of dementia, and they can lose thousands and thousands of dollars. So it’s awareness to help family members and seniors themselves be more aware of it.”

The sessions will include information on safe banking for seniors, fraud protection, scam identification and advice for seniors on what to do if it happens to them.

A bingo game during the session will reaffirm the advice. The two-hour sessions will also have snacks and prizes.

People attending in person are asked to RSVP by calling (906) 523-5920 by 4 p.m. Wednesday. Capacity is limited.

The first session will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Lakeview Manor in Hancock. There will also be a call-in option at (614) 721-0867. The conference ID is #318 091 305.

For those who can’t make it Thursday, there will be one the following day from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Park Avenue Apartments in Calumet. That one has a call-in option at the same phone number. The conference ID for that session is #708 060 078.

Starting at $2.99/week.
