BARAGA — Baraga Area Schools Superintendent Rich Sarau told the school board he’s leaning toward recommending the school seek a bond issue, rather than a sinking fund millage to fund projects.
“I don’t think that’s the way we want to go,” Sarau said Monday at the school board meeting, regarding what he’s heard about the limitations to sinking fund millage funds. “It really ties my hands.”
Sarau will continue to research the matter and report his recommendations on the funding to the board at a future meeting.
In other news, Principal Tim Marczak informed the board report cards will go home Wednesday, a couple days later than expected due to recent closures due to widespread illness during the cold and flu season.
In addition, contracts and resignations were a big topic.
The board approved tenure teaching contracts with high school civics and history teacher Greg Markkanen and first-grade teacher Mike Aubin; and 2017-18 probationary contracts to: K-12 music teacher Tyrell Peterson, elementary special education teacher Rachael Lassi, at-risk counselor Elisa Anderson, high school and junior high math and economics teacher Christina Gallup, high school language arts and Spanish teacher Lauren Scherr, second-grade teacher Desiree Lauritsen, high school and elementary art teacher Viktoria Klein and high school and junior high science teacher Lori Wisniewski.
The board accepted with regret the resignations of varsity girls basketball coach Keith Willis, who will stay on as eighth-grade coach; and Katie Mayo as the cheerleading coach.
In other action, the board appointed Byron Sailor as the electoral representative at the Copper Country Intermediate School District biennial election, with Sheila Osterman as alternate, an action to be finalized at the next meeting. Both were absent from Monday’s meeting.
The board will meet next at 5:30 p.m. on May 15.
