Theatre boiler project starts

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Calumet Theatre President Dan Jamison said on Monday that the parts for the new steam boiler heating system have now been ordered.

CALUMET — After more than two years of planning and delays, the Calumet Theatre’s boiler replacement project started Monday with the order of new boiler unit.

Calumet Theatre Company President Dan Jamison said that he and Marty Travathan, owner of Marty’s Heating Services, signed the work contract Monday. The contract also requires the signature of Calumet Village Manager Megan Haselden, whom Jamison said would sign it on Tuesday.

On Monday, Jamison said, Travathan received a $40,000 check to place the order for the new heating unit, which should arrive within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, village personnel will need to remove property that is currently stored in the furnace room.

The next step will be for the floor of the furnace room to be steam cleaned and epoxy coated. Jamison said Travathan’s wife owns the company that will do that, which he included into the cost of the furnace installation.

“He’s going to then take the (failed) boiler and its accessories apart,” Jamison said.

Those pieces will then be hoisted out of the building through a backstage door leading from the basement. The new boiler is expected to arrive within the next couple of weeks. The pieces will be brought into the rear of the building, placed on the stage, and lowered into the basement through a trap door on the stage.

The total cost of the project, said Jamison, will total $57,000. The majority of that has come in the form of CLG reimbursement grants. The theater will need to pay $7,000.

Jamison did not give a project completion date.
