Huskies celebrate graduation

Michigan Tech marks graduate, undergraduate commencements

HOUGHTON — More than 1,000 Michigan Technological University students celebrated their graduation from the university this weekend.

With enrollment continuing to grow at the university, for the second year two ceremonies were held: one on Friday for graduate students, and one on Saturday for undergraduates.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Chang K. Park delivered the commencement address at both ceremonies. The Tech alumnus graduated in 1973 with dual degrees in electrical engineering and engineering administration.

Park is president and CEO of Universal Remote Control Inc., which he founded 30 years ago.

In addition to working with a number of other philanthropic groups, he is also chairman of the Chang K. Park Foundation, an organization that supports human rights, elimination of poverty and hunger, and implementation of political reform and economic justice.

This spring’s class of graduate students boasted 42 Ph.D. students and 258 Huskies earning their master’s degrees. Graduate student speaker was Zazil Santizo-Huerta, who is earning her Ph.D. in mathematical sciences. The Fulbright scholarship learned about Tech while an instructor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she had received her undergraduate degree.

From here, she will move to Los Angeles, where she has accepted a university teaching position.

Addressing around 760 undergraduates Saturday was Vincent Barfield. Like Park, he was completing dual bachelor’s degrees, his in mathematics and computer science.

Barfield is looking for a software development position where he builds data-based models for machine learning.

Starting at $2.99/week.
