Fun at Fall Fest
Houghton holds annual seasonal event
HOUGHTON — There was still plenty of green across the Portage Canal Saturday, but the hay rides and cider pointed the way to fall.
Houghton’s third annual Fall Fest was held on the downtown pier Saturday afternoon.
“I think people just love the pier, and they love fall, and this is a great time of year to come out and enjoy what we have to offer,” said Amy Zawada, Houghton’s community and business development director. “I overheard someone say it’s like a Hallmark movie. We’ll take that.”
This year’s fall fest also added vendors, from kettle corn to sourdough.
New Power Tour, which made cider on the spot the past two years, wasn’t able to come; they will return next year, Zawada said. In their place, the Houghton High School hockey team stepped up to sell cider served hot or cold, as well as coffee. The Houghton High School basketball team was also on hand for face painting, turning people into deer or butterflies.
It’s also helping out the downtown, Zawada said. She’d seen several people head up to Shelden Avenue afterward for a full meal.
There were several painted tableaus where people could stick their heads in for photos, whether of Halloween creatures or autumn scarecrows.
Rebecca Patterson of South Range was setting up a shot of Teriana Patterson and Henry Hernandez, who mugged for the camera as the faces of two Sasquatches.
They’d never been to Fall Fest before, and wanted to check it out.
“It’s so nice down here,” Rebecca Patterson said. “We’re going to top it all off with a hayride.”
What else did they like? Rebecca chose the booth where they picked out a Halloween pumpkin. Teriana’s response was to wave a bag of spicy pretzels.
Alexander Sanford, 8, of Houghton bowled on a hay-bounded alley, getting a wind-aided strike on pumpkin-colored pins.
They came looking to have fun, and possibly buy things or get some apple cider, said his mother, Candra Sanford.
“It seems like a lot of fun,” she said. “I was expecting it to be cold, but this is great.”
