HANCOCK – Saturday was a busy day in Downtown Hancock as businesses celebrated spring in the Copper Country by hosting the event, Kid Tested, Parent Approved, presented by the Hancock Business Association (HBA).

Young people got to experience archery at Northwoods Sporting Goods, while others got to Dress as a Princess at Celebrations Bridal and Formal, both on Quincy Street.

Lisa Naber, and Gina Burto, volunteers with St. Vincent de Paul, helped children create chicken finger puppets from paper. Naber said the turn-out was better than expected when considering the cold and inclement weather.

“We’re ggetting in a lot of school-age kids, so it’s been wonderful,” she said. “Everyone wants to do the chicken puppet.”

Across the street, in the former Hancock Bike Shop, the Fellowship Committee of the Church of the Resurrection, were helping kids, and others young at heart, in decorating cupcakes.

Shelly Lucchesi, owner of Xpressions Salon, and one of the event’s organizers, called the day a success.

“We’re very happy with the turnout,” said Lucchesi. “A little concerned about the snow this morning and people maybe not coming out, but it’s been great.”

Lucchesi said 16 businesses were involved in the event.

“It’s been busy,” said Lucchesi. “Isn’t that wonderful? It’s getting people into the businesses to see what they have for spring, and what’s going on.”

At City Hall, kids got to plant a seed, create paper puppets at the Community Arts Center, and finger print a ceramic tile at the Magic Kiln. KC Bonkers offered their signature Bubblers for a buck.

The community event, which started at 11 a.m., included a showing of the movie “Big Hero 6” at the Orpheum Theatre at 2 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
