Laurium’s DPW will continue snow removal
LAURIUM — Laurium Village officials have made tentative agreements with numerous other municipalities and agencies to ensure continued snow removal services for village residents.
“Our Public Works Department employees will do their best to ensure that the roads are maintained as best we can with the limited equipment we have been able to acquire,” said Village Manager Ian Lewis.
Village Trustee Jenn Jenich-Laplander said on Friday that thanks to the North Houghton County Water and Sewer Authority, the village of Laurium will have a temporary facility to serve as its Department of Public Works garage. The facility is located on Lake Linden Avenue.
Jenich-Laplander said that the village has been able to rent a number of vehicles and the NHCWS’s loan of their building will provide a temporary home for them. However, it needs work to make it ready. She said the village office has received innumerable calls and request from organizations, municipalities and individuals asking what they can do to help the village.
“We need volunteers,” she said.
The village will be cleaning the facility, including hanging temporary lights, and making it usable for the DPW crew.
For those who are unable to physically assist, she said, any donations would be appreciated. Because nearly everything was lost in Wednesday’s DPW building fire, the department needs everything from toilet paper to to shovels, including:
• Tables, chairs brooms
• Coffee, a coffee maker and filters and bottled water and soda (pop)
• Cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet paper
• Pens, pencils, radios, work gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, shovels, shop lights and extension cords
Cleaning and preparing the building is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at 55996 Lake Linden Ave.
“We’ve been truly moved by the outpouring of support from the community, and we need the community’s help now more than ever,” Jenich-Laplander said. “We’ll be cleaning out the space, hanging temporary lights, and making it ready for our crew to move in and get to work. Your time and effort will be critical in helping us get up and running.”
