MSP warn of ice on Lake Gogebic

BERGLAND — Michigan State Police at the Wakefield Post said they’ve been made aware of an approximate 40-inch-high ice heave running east to west across Lake Gogebic, about 2 miles south of the Ontonagon County Park near Bergland. Trooper advise that if you are planning to go ice fishing, snowmobiling, or any other winter activities on the lake please exercise caution.

At around 10:30 p.m. (CST) on Jan. 10, a trooper from the Wakefield Post responded to a report of a snowmobile that went through the ice on the lake.

The rider and snowmobile were safely retrieved by others in the group she was riding with. While the rider was uninjured, she was quickly rushed to a nearby location to warm up.

According to DNR personnel, two more snowmobilers broke through the ice Sunday night, and another incident occurred recently.

There have not been any fatalities, but authorities say four people in total have gone through the ice on Lake Gogebic in the past few week.

State police advise to always check ice thickness with a spud or auger, avoid cracks, heaves or open water and, if possible, ride with a group.

Ice conditions can change, so stay alert and stay safe. The strongest ice is clear with a bluish tint, while weak ice is formed by melted and refrozen snow and appears milky.
