Lake Linden man charged with gas theft

LAKE LINDEN — A retired Lake Linden village employee has been arrested and charged for his role in the theft of thousands of dollars worth of gasoline from the Village.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Calumet Post have completed the investigation into, what they call, “a theft scheme,” involving a retired Lake Linden Department of Public Works employee.

Ronald Schmitt, 71, was arraigned on several charges Tuesday in Houghton County 97th District Court.

Schmitt is accused of stealing gasoline from the Department of Public Works for his personal use over the past 12 years. Through the investigation, it was revealed that Schmitt had allegedly taken gasoline using a key fob meant for fueling Department of Public Works vehicles.

Police alleged Schmitt had retained the fuel key fob after his retirement and continued using it for personal use.

Since he retired in 2012, it is alleged that more than $28,000 of gasoline had taken.

Last November, State Police opened an investigation into the matter after concerns were raised by the Lake Linden Department of Public Works.

In partnership with the Lake Linden Village Police Department, a thorough investigation was completed.

The investigation included MSP allegedly catching Schmitt attempting to fuel his personal truck using the stolen key fob.

Police said that due to statute of limitations restrictions, charges can only be filed reflecting the past six years, despite the thefts allegedly having gone on for a longer period of time.

Schmitt was arrested, charged in connection with the thefts and was arraigned Tuesday on three felony charges:

• Count 1: Using a computer to commit a crime

• Count 2: Larceny greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000

• Count 3: Financial Transaction Device – stealing/ retaining without consent

Schmitt was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. He is expected to be back in court on Feb. 3, 2025.

State Police remind the public that Schmitt is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

Starting at $2.99/week.
