Houghton-PT schools seeking board member
School board to act on vacancy at its meeting on January 20
HOUGHTON — The Houghton-Portage Township School District is looking for a new board member to fill a partial term.
The two-year term runs until November 2026. People can apply until Jan. 17.
No candidates filed for the partial term on the November ballot.
Board Secretary Mike Salmi, who was appointed in 2023, was one of two candidates elected to a four-year term. Treasurer Nels Christopherson was one of two candidates defeated in the race, leading to a vacancy.
The district posted the position Monday morning, said Superintendent Anders Hill.
To apply, people must be adult U.S. citizens who have been a Michigan resident for at least 30 days, and who live in the school district by the 30th day before the appointment.
Anyone interested should mail or e-mail Hill at ahill@hpts.us or send a packet to him at the district with their resume and letter of interest. It should also include their answers to questions on their relevant qualifications, their view of a board member’s role, and the district’s strengths and potential areas for improvement.
Hill said the vacancy would likely be on the agenda for the regular board meeting on Jan. 20.
