Escanaba mistaken for ‘active shooter event’ area

ESCANABA — Thousands of people reportedly tuned into streams of Delta County’s police and emergency radio system Monday after what was likely an error in geography marked the county as the site of an active shooting event.

Multiple news outlets based in the Chicago area have reported that a 48-year-old man was shot in a South Side alley Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the 8000-block of South Escanaba Avenue. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition but was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The shooting was still under investigation as of press time, and no arrests had been made.

Despite the shooting taking place roughly 327 miles from Escanaba, Mich., the Delta County, Fire and EMS broadcast repeated by Broadcastify.com was marked as an active shooting area in the Scanner Radio & Fire iPhone app. The app is ranked as the #7 most downloaded app in Apple’s App Store’s news category. While the number of downloads for the app is not reported, it has a 4.6 our of 5 stars rating with more the 455,000 reviews.

The app also has a setting that alerts users of streams that have more than 2,000 listeners, which may have drawn users from outside the area to the stream. The exact number of listeners reported by users varied, with some residents reporting that their cell phone apps indicated nearly 8,000 listeners shortly after 10 a.m. Monday. By noon, the number of listeners had dropped to 4,830 according to Broadcastify.

In addition to the Scanner Radio & Fire iPhone app, the stream itself is available through the Broadcastify website as well as multiple other smart phone apps. It includes the radio systems for the Delta County Sheriff Department, Escanaba Public Safety, Gladstone Public Safety, Michigan State Police Gladstone Post, Hannahville Police Department, Escanaba Area DNR Fire, Delta County Volunteer Fire Departments and Rampart EMS.

Starting at $2.99/week.
