One party finds success
Most Republicans gain in state, federal races in Copper Country
HOUGHTON — Most State and federal races in the Copper Country showed a shift toward the Republican party in 2024.
In the presidential race, Republican nominee Donald Trump received 59.5% of the four-county vote, versus 39% for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Trump jumped 1.8 percentage points from his 2020 total, while Harris ran 1.5 points behind President Joe Biden’s numbers.
The trend was reflected across all four counties.
Democratic nominee Elissa Slotkin, who was declared the winner of the race against Republican nominee Mike Rogers Wednesday afternoon, also underperformed relative to retiring U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s numbers from 2018, her most recent campaign. Slotkin got 38.1% of the Copper Country vote, versus 59.1% for Rogers. That number is down 6.1 percentage points from Stabenow’s result in her race against Republican John James.
The sole Republican at the state or federal level to post lower numbers in the Copper Country was U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman. He received 58.9% of the vote against Democratic opponent Callie Barr, down 0.5 percentage points from his 2022 race against Bob Lorinser and down 2.5 percentage points from his performance against Dana Ferguson during the previous presidential year of 2020.
2024 was the second election with the current boundaries of the 110th District, which lost Baraga County to the 109th District after redistricting. In the remaining three Copper Country counties, Republican State Rep. Greg Markkanen received 62.8% of the vote against Democratic challenger Kim Corcoran, a gain of 0.8 percentage points over his performance against Casey Verberkmoes in 2022.
In the 109th District, where Republican challenger unseated Democratic State Rep. Jenn Hill after one term in office, his 66.6% of the Baraga County vote ran 3.4 percentage points ahead of 2022 Republican nominee Melody Wagner’s 2022 performance. Hill’s 33.5% fell by an equal amount.
