HOUGHTON — Michigan Technological University will be hosting its 2024 Alumni Reunion this coming weekend. Check-in and registration begins on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 8 a.m., followed by a weekend of exciting activities, tours, presentations and more.

On Thursday, the reunion will officially kick off with a presentation by John A. Jaszczak, the director and curator of the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum. With a focus on key people and great minerals, this event will look at the mineral museum’s history, current status and its bright future.

There will also be a special reception for the College of Computing in the lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. New and old friends of the College of Computing, along with faculty, are encouraged to join to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the college of computing, along with the 50-year anniversary of computer science at Michigan Tech.

One of the most cherished events of the reunion takes place on Friday; the Class of 1974 and Golden M Celebration. Join to celebrate 50 years with the Class of 1974 and other members of the Golden M Society. Each 1974 graduate will get their 50-year Golden M pin and certificate. A luncheon will be held to celebrate the class’ induction into the Golden M Society.

The reunion will wrap-up on Saturday with a variety of outdoor events. The morning bird-watching walk, led by the CFRES dean and ornithologist David Flaspohler, will offer a beautiful Keweenaw morning walk along easy trails and wetlands. Possible sightings include bald eagles, great blue herons, sandhill cranes, red-winged blackbirds, trumpeter swans and more.

The Outdoor Adventure Program will also be hosting two kayak trips on the Portage Canal. This beautiful stretch of canal is peppered with historical, cultural and natural points of interest. OAP will have two trained staff leading both trips and will teach basic skills before taking to the water.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Alumni Social and Honored Classes Exhibit will begin in the J.R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library. The exhibit will feature memorabilia, yearbooks and other artifacts from the honored classes, organized by the University Archives.

Winners of the various Alumni Awards will also be honored during reunion weekend. Outstanding Young Alumni Andrea Falasaco and Anne Dancy Maher, Honorary Alumni David D. Reed and Humanitarian Danna R. Kasom will be among the honorees. Award winners are chosen by the Alumni Board of Directors and are meant to recognize extraordinary students and alumni.
