Honoring dedication: Glenn Anderson honored by Hancock city council

Joshua Vissers/Daily Mining Gazette Hancock’s retiring city manager Glenn Anderson receives a plaque and award honoring his service from mayor John Haeussler at Wednesday’s board meeting.

HANCOCK — Wednesday night’s Hancock city council meeting started with recognition for Glenn Anderson, the retiring city manager. The board voted to make Dec. 22, 2018, “Glenn D. Anderson Day” and presented him with a plaque and award to take with him to his new position on the Houghton County Board.

“So they know that you had your own day,” Hancock mayor John Haeussler said.

Anderson has worked as the city manager for 23 years, and attributed the city’s success in that time to the mayors, council members, administration staff, city employees and committee members who worked with him.

“It’s been a great run for the last 23 years,” Anderson said.

Anderson also said his replacement, Barry Givens, will make a great city manager.

The council voted 6-1, with trustee Will Lytle dissenting, to extend the emergency resolution prohibiting recreational marijuana establishments passed in November for another 30 days, through Jan. 14.

The city also began the process of putting a more long-term replacement for the bill in place, moving to publish ordinance #302 and schedule a public hearing. The vote passed 6-1 again, with Lytle dissenting.

“The wording is very similar,” Haeussler said.

Haeussler said it’s important to put the ordinance in place because the council doesn’t know when or what kind of regulation is going to be rolled out by the state, which has one year to establish regulatory laws for commercial recreational marijuana establishments.

Haeussler emphasized the ordinance only covers businesses.

“It has no impact whatsoever on the freedoms enjoyed by individuals under the new law,” he said.

The council unanimously approved numerous mayor-appointed city representatives and commission members. Michele Blau was appointed to the Finnish Theme Committee, Whitney Warstler, Jim Hainault and Mike Hauswirth were appointed to the Local Development Finance Authority. Bob Frantti and Steve Zutter were appointed to the Downtown Development Authority. Steph Olsson was appointed to the Hancock Housing Commission. Andrew Lahti and Kurt Rickard were appointed to the planning commission. John Diebel, Dave Dow, Crissy Gerhard, Amanda Jackson, Kevin Kalinec, Deb Mann, Bill Marlor and Craig Pellizzaro were appointed to the recreation commission with Givens as a non-voting, ex officio member. Paul LaBine was appointed as the city council member for the zoning board of appeals, and Kurt Rickard was appointed as the planning commission liaison. Jerry Parker and Steve Walton were also appointed to the zoning board of appeals. Tom Vichich was appointed to the board of review, but would like to resign the position and an search is ongoing for a suitable replacement, according to Haeussler.
