UPCAP opens registration for dementia caregivers series
The Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress, or UPCAP, has opened registration for its online Dementia Caregiving series.
This three-week course will offer education on a variety of dementia-related topics during a weekly, one-hour Zoom class. Registration is free and will remain open until July 21. The class runs from 2-3 p.m. on Thursdays, July 25 to August 8.
The first session, “The Dementia Overview for Family and Friends,” will provide information about dementia as a disease, discuss how the disease affects more than just memory, the role of confusion, and communication skills.
“Planning Activities for Persons with Dementia” is an interactive session. Instructors will offer information on engaging activities and assisting individuals with dementia in a way that promotes contented involvement.
The final session, “Understanding Behavior and Support Needs of Persons With Dementia,” provides information on certain behaviors and potential triggers, as well as strategies that can be useful for dementia caregivers.
UPCAP’s website explains, “Whether you are a seasoned dementia caregiver, family or friend, or if you would just like to know more about dementia, this 3-part series provides a better understanding of dementia and the impact it has on the person with the disease.”
Along with the topics mentioned above, the online Dementia Caregiving series will teach about the stages of dementia, meaningful daily activities, creating a positive environment, and benefits of self-care.
UPCAP offers several other programs, as well. The U.P. Fresh Food Access Program works to “increase access to locally sourced fresh and healthy foods.”
Their U.P. Food as Medicine program is based on a prescription for health model and is designed to address and improve “the food security of individuals at risk for or diagnosed with a chronic health condition.”
They also operate the U.P. 211 call center. This provides accessible, responsive and professional information that helps with children, aging parents or the entire family. The call center operates 24/7.
UPCAP’s website also has a section dedicated to caregiver resources. Caregivers can find information on deciding if a nursing home is right for their loved one, how-to videos on providing care, financial and legal assistance and information on maintaining a balance between caregiving and living your own life. They include sections focused on specialized care, such as Native American, LGBTQ+ and veteran caregiving.
Those interested in the dementia caregiving course can register online at www.upcap.org, under the Events tab. The 211 call center is also available to help with registration.
While there is no charge for the classes, participants must have a device with internet and an email address.
