April 9
• Houghton County Jail Informational Meeting, 6:30 p.m. Laid Township Hall, Pelkie. The League of Women Voters, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department and the Houghton County Board of Commissioners will hold a public meeting about the proposals under consideration for replacement of the aging and undersized county jail. Houghton County residents are encouraged to attend, and share their opinions on the issue. This particular presentation will be limited, because it will be part of the regular Laird Township Board meeting.
• The Copper Country Recycling Initiative will hold its next monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 9, from 4-5:15 p.m. in the Houghton Portage Library Community Room. All are welcome to attend.
• Final Journey – An Exploration of End of Life. 6 p.m. Portage Lake District Library. The third and final session of Omega House’s free three-week presentation will raise awareness and provide education of the process of dying from professionals in the fields of medicine, spirituality, funeral preparation, social work and hospice. All are welcome.
• Better Together” will meet on from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. The speaker will be Tonya Rowe speaking on “Confidence in God.” All area women are cordially invited to attend this fun event. A brunch will be served and there is a suggested donation of $10. • 2025 Baraga County Spring Fling Family Resource Fair, 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m. The annual Baraga County Spring Fling Family Resource Fair is a FREE, fun, family event for families in Baraga County with young children. This year there will be 2 magic shows to go along with the usual giveaways, activities, games and free books! Located in the Niiwin Akeaa Center, 111 Beartown Rd. Baraga
• Butterflies, bees and “cues to care” will be featured at the Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium, set for 9 a.m. to noon on Zoom. The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Keynote speaker Kim Eierman will discuss cues to care, or ways native gardeners can address the concerns of their neighbors and local officials. Other topics include gardening for butterflies and how native bees nest and forage in the forest. To learn more and register, visit keweenaw.wildones.org.

• The Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (KUUF) will host a public forum online titled “Preventing Violence in Churches, Schools, Businesses” at 10:30 am. The presentation will discuss prevention and response strategies to potential and active violence in a variety of settings. The speaker will be Josh Sarranen, Houghton County Sheriff. • “Memory Loss/Dementia Caregiver Support Group” 6 p.m. Canal View Hancock. It takes a lot to care for a loved one. This monthly group is safe place for those caring for loved ones of those suffering from memory loss or dementia. These monthly meetings are open to the public.
April 17
•”Omega House’s Grief Support Group Meeting” – You are welcome to participate in Omega House’s Third Thursday Community Grief Support Group from 5 – 6 p.m. There will be options to participate in person or online/phone. We will be gathering in person at Omega House. We also provide a zoom link to be online or on the phone at this meeting from the comfort of your own space.
