Republican Failure Editor: Republicans on our local midterm ballot have ALL failed to represent our best interests as constituents. Most of the people in the Copper County want excellent affordable healthcare, a robust sustainable economy, high quality education for our children, a strong elite military for defense of our country, the freedom of speech and practice of religion, and an effective government that represents the will of the people. Vote for Republicans Dear Sirs, It appears that the wild and radical democrats (including socialism) have a serious sickness that cannot be cured. They simply are not willing to read history that showed the repetitive disasters of the past. We would expect to see the official termination of our great way of living if the new democrats win in this coming November. The American people desperately needs to bring back common sense democrats again or, even better than that, they need to vote for republicans (including U.S. Senator Mike Rogers). Time to hate wolves — again? Editor: In the September 21 Daily Mining Gazette I read of legislation proposed in the State House to require hunting and trapping of gray wolves in Michigan if and when the species is removed from the federal list of endangered species. This is not the first time, and probably not the last, for such a proposal. What is new, of course, is that voters go to the polls in another month and will see the names of the sponsor and co-sponsor, respectively, of the proposed bill - state Representatives Dave Prestin, R-Cedar River, and Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock. ...

Opportunities Editor: The upcoming election offers great opportunities! In every instance, we can choose to do what’s best for our communities or, on the other hand, what’s profitable, in the short term, for us as individuals. It's happening here! Editor: Recent events have reminded me of some books I have read: 'It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis. What will happen when America has a dictator, written in 1935. This story looks at what could happen if authoritarianism and fascism took hold in the US. I read it several years ago and remember thinking, thank goodness it couldn't happen here. Well, guess what, folks, it is happening here. Another excellent novel that shows how fascism works is Isabel Allende's "A Long Petal of the Sea." A Small Community Divided Editor: Here in Carp Lake Township, we are seeing a trend that should concern all of us: our small community is becoming divided. What is causing that division? In my view, much of it comes down to local politics and the way some local government business is being handled. Local government should be about the people who live here — not personalities, grudges, sides, or who agrees with whom.
