LL-H girls win 3rd straight regional championship

Daily Globe (Ironwood)/Jason Juno The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes celebrates witht he Division 3 region trophy Friday in Wakefield.

WAKEFIELD — In the Michigan High School Athletic Association Regional 47-3 Track Meet held on Friday, the Bessemer boys’ track-and-field team won its fifth straight meet and racked up 84 points to second-place Lake Linden-Hubbell’s 39. Chassell was third with 23 points followed by Ontonagon (15), Ewen-Trout Creek (9) and Dollar Bay (9).

On the girls side, Lake Linden-Hubbell nearly tripled the points of second place Chassell 91.5-32.5. Rounding out the field were Ontonagon (21), Dollar Bay (13), Wakefield-Marenisco (11), Ewen-Trout Creek (5), Jeffers (5), Baraga (4) and Bessemer (3).

The regional meet also gives track-and-field athletes the opportunity to qualify for the Upper Peninsula’s signature track event: the U.P. Finals. Track athletes qualify by finishing in the top four of individual events and the top two places in the relay events.

The U.P. Finals will be held in Kingsford on June 3.

Bessemer’s Brayden Tomes has become the master at running anchor legs on the relays. He ran to victory with Tim Rowe, Cade Mazzon and Tad Rowe in 4×400 meter relay and Uriah Aili substituted with Tad Rowe for another win in the 4×800 meter relay.

Members of both relay teams said they had not lost a race this year nor have they had a close race. They all said they want to not only win the 4×800 relay but will go all out to break the U.P. record in that event.

Tomes also ran to wins in the 200 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles and Mazzon added a second place finish in the 800 meters and Tim Rowe was second in the 400 meter run and the long jump.

The Speedboys completed a sweep of the four relays as Jamie Jett, Collin Broemer, Michael Hatfield and Nick Trudgeon took the 4×100 meter relay and Max Samardich, Tad Rowe, Andy Aspinwall and Jet were golden in the 4×200 meter relay.

Isaiah Aili was a double winner in the 800 meter and 1600 meter and finished second to Adam Mazurek in the 3200 meter run. Mazurek also finished third in the 1600 meter run.

Uriah Aili qualified for the U.P. Finals in the 1,600 meter run (2nd), 800 meter run (4th) and the pole vault (3rd).

Ben Bogaczyk picked up another first place in the shot put.

“Even with tough conditions today, the kids had quite a few PRs,” Bessemer coach Mark Mazzon said. “We were just hoping to get as many kids to the U.P. Finals as we could. Now we have two weeks to train and be at our best in Kingsford. Wakefield did a great job of getting everything ready for the meet considering the weather we’ve had.”

Ontonagon’s Jaden Weisinger is usually known for his speed, but he took firsts in two field events-the high jump and the long jump.

Noah Lukkari was third in the 800 meter run and teamed up with Elijah Dupie, Micah Blake and James Domitrovich for another third place finish in the 4×400 meter relay.

Ewen Trout-Creek’s Jacob Witt replaced his football and basketball for the discus and shot put and finished in second and third place respectively.

It was E-TC’s first year back as an organized track-and-field team and coach Brad Besonen said it had been “an outstanding year.”

“It’s gone very well,” Besonen said. “We got some people to qualify for the U.P. Finals and the kids have worked hard and had fun and been supportive of each other. And we’ve got a lot of young kids coming back.”

Isaiah Sturkol, of Wakefield-Marenisco was the pole vault winner.

Every time Lake Linden’s Laura Lyons ran and jumped, she won. She qualified to run in the U.P. Finals in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter dashes and then took her talents over to the high jump pit.

Her teammates won eight other events as the Lakes looked bulletproof on Friday.

Lakes coach Gary Guisfredi stated the obvious.

“We did win quite a few,” Guisfredi said. “Depth was important and the points all added up. Laura Lyons had a real good day and was our point leader, but we got good performances from a number of kids. MacKenzie LePage was a multiple winner and Jamie Hendrickson won the high jump and was second in the 400 meter dash. Mariah Wilmer won the in the 800 meter run and was part of winning 4×400 meter relay team and Sienna Anderson was first in the 100 meter hurdles. It was a good team effort.”

Ontonagon’s Holly Wardynski and Jenny Labyak had first place finishes in the discus and the 300 meter hurdles respectively and Fahren Kolpack was third in the 400 meter dash and teamed with Wardynski, Labyak and Belen Borda in the 4×100 meter relay and Labyak, Borda and Kaili Weiner in the 4×400 meter relay for a pair of second place finishes.

Kolpack wanted to talk about the 4×100 relay race.

“That race went well,” Kolpack said. “The handoffs were smooth. We ran with lots of heart and we were close to Lake Linden but not quite. But we qualified. We went to the U.P.’s last year and the Ontonagon girls won.”

Ontonagon coach Brian Amos was also pleased with the day.

“Things went all right today,” Ontonagon coach Brian Amos said. “Our two relays qualified and a couple of individuals qualified. The kids were getting their best times and distances.”

Wakefield-Marenisco’s Evelyn Hokans is taking the trip to Kingsford after a good second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles and Hannah Plemons was third in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the 200 meter dash. Macie Ahonen, Elizabeth Makela, Carlee Yon and Melissa Wanink ran a real good 4×800 meter relay and finished in second place.

‘Our goal has been to qualify for the last three meets,” Wanink said. “We’ve only run together three times as a team. We’re excited and nervous to go. We’re looking forward to running on a rubber track and to wearing spikes.”

W-M coach Lauren Korpi said their work crew worked long and hard to make the meet possible and she was happy with her team’s qualifiers.

“All six lanes were covered with water yesterday and the long jump was in bad shape,” Korpi said. “But I was happy for our girls that qualified. I was real disappointed for our 4×200 relay team. They finished .02 seconds from qualifying. It was a heartbreaker.”

Elise Besonen, Madelyn Cronkright and Britni Lakkala will represent Ewen-Trout Creek at the U.P. Finals in the 800 meter run, the long jump and the shot put.

“This will be my first time at the U.P. Finals,” Lakkala said. “I’m excited and a little intimidated, a little of both. Track is making a comeback at E-TC. A lot of kids are enjoying having it back.”
