Trenton: Calumet wins, Houghton, Hancock lose

TRENTON — For the second straight game, the Calumet Copper Kings faced a shootout in the MIHL Showcase. Unlike Friday, the Copper Kings emerged victorious Saturday over the Romeo Bulldogs, 4-3.

After having their 10-game winning streak stopped Friday, the Copper Kings found themselves down 1-0 after Frank Ruffino struck 9 minutes, 5 seconds in. Needing a response, Calumet got just that 55 seconds later when assistant captain Ed Beiring found the back of the net.

Daylen Anderson scored 2:00 into the second period to give the Copper Kings the lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Andrew Cate evened things 2:42 later.

Calumet regained the lead late in the second when Sam Erkkila scored at 14:38.

Joey Morris evened the game at 3-3 at 12:10 of the third period.

In the ensuing shootout, captain Rory Andreson and Brent Loukus both scored for Calumet while neither skater scored for the Bulldogs.

Nick Voelker made 17 stops in the win.

TRENTON — After a big win over Warren DeLaSalle on Friday, the Houghton Gremlins struggled to a 4-1 loss Saturday to the Northville Mustangs.

Devin Laba struck just 4:04 into the contest. The Mustangs then extended that lead just 1:08 later when Nick Bonofiglio scored.

The Gremlins cut the lead back to one when Ronald Olson scored at 8:18, unassisted.

Danny Scorzo regained the two-goal lead just 2:23 into the third period. Scorzo added a second tally with 28 seconds left when he scored on the empty net after the Gremlins pulled Will Stier to get an extra attacker on the ice.

Stier made 18 saves in the loss.

TRENTON — The Hancock Bulldogs carried a 3-2 lead into the third period against Brother Rice Warriors. The Warriors struck four times in the third to earn a 6-3 win.

The Warriors took a lead just 7:54 when Ethan Nystrom found the net.

Hancock evened things at 16:27 when captain Teddy Randell scored his first goal since getting injured against Negaunee on Jan. 19.

Just 4:17 into the second period, Alex Nordstrom gave the Bulldogs the lead.

After Ryan Giniel evened the game at 7:47, the Bulldogs regained the lead on the power play when Colton Salani at 8:40.

The Warriors got two goals in 2 ½ minutes from Michael McIerney and a goal each from Matthew Kesto and Will Duncan in the final frame to earn the win.

Dawson Kero made 33 saves in the loss.
