NORTH OAKS, Minn. - Louise P. Marta, 80, of Eagle River, died of lung cancer on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at home in North Oaks, Minn.

Louise was born on May 20, 1933 at the family home in Kearsarge, the daughter of Onni and Eva (Koski) Koopikka. She attended Wolverine grade school and graduated from Calumet High School in 1951. She worked as a secretary/stenographer for the FBI in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Wisc., and Detroit, Mich. and later managed her own business of floral arrangements and interior decorations. She married John Marta on June 8, 1957 at Our Lady of the Pines church in Copper Harbor. They resided in Michigan and Minnesota.

She enjoyed tennis, alpine and cross-country skiing, camping, golf, and hiking. Louise was an avid sports fan, master gardener, and coached hockey. Rock collecting and polishing were a passion. Family and friends will miss her lively personal correspondence. A contributing person, she was active in: her church, working on the Board and teaching religious classes; the PTA; League of Women Voters and as an election judge. She was a member and President of both the North Oaks Garden Club and the North Oaks Children's Hospital Guild II. Volunteer work was done for Stella del Nord (Oral history recording) and the Keweenaw County Historical Society. Among her attributes were a love of family and friends, strong moral beliefs, great sense of humor, a friend for life. She personified SISU. Louise was a Yooper who relished the Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and its people.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Sandra Wheeler.

Surviving are her husband John Marta of Eagle River; son, Michael (Teresa Budzynski) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; daughters, Michele Maneri of Seattle, Wash. and Lisa Marta of Scandia, Minn.; son, David (Pamela Wikstrom) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; grandchildren, Michele and Louise Maneri, Joseph, Daniel and John Marta; sister, Kay Watson of Barryton, Mich.; and brother-in-law, Arthur Wheeler of Kearsarge; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Holcomb-Henry-Boom- Purcell Funeral Home, 515 Hwy. 96, Shoreview, MN 55126.

The funeral will be held in Incarnation Lutheran Church, 4880 Hodgson Rd. Shoreview, MN 55126 on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials be given to the Keweenaw County Historical Society or charity of your preference.
