GIANTS RIDGE, Minn. - Local cross country skiers competed in the largest high school meet in the nation earlier this month, the Mesabi East Invitational at Giant's Ridge Ski Area in northern Minnesota.
Members of the Copper Country Ski Tigers turned in impressive results against some of the nation's fastest junior skiers. Fourteen members competed in varsity or JV divisions in five-kilometer classic or freestyle races.
"The highlight of the weekend was the boys varsity team performance," coach Tom Wood said. "They finished fourth out of more than 70 teams, perhaps the best finish ever by a Michigan team."
Houghton High School senior Dan Wood led the boys with a sixth-place finish of 197 in the varsity freestyle race.
Houghton junior David Jasczcak finished 13th in the varsity freestyle, Calumet freshman Mitch Delong was 21st in the varsity classic and Houghton junior Isaac Stone was 28th in the varsity freestyle.
For the girls, Houghton junior Sarah Lyle was 13th in the varsity freestyle and Houghton senior Isabel Sharp 23rd in the varsity classic.
In the boys JV division, three Houghton skiers finished in the top 15: Tim Stone (freestyle, fourth), Matt Chard (classic, fifth) and Ben Wood (classic, 11th).
