William Robert Lepisto

HANCOCK - William Robert Lepisto, 77, a resident of Hancock, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 25, 2014.

Bill was born on December 3, 1936, in Hancock, a son of the late William and Selma (Ruotsi) Lepisto. As a child, he attended the Hancock Schools.

Bill went to work with Thornton Construction. He then worked for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for 10 years. During that time, he was proud to say he helped dredge each of the Great Lakes and spent four years building the St. Lawrence Seaway aboard the U.S. Gaillard, named after the colonel who engineered the Panama Canal. He sailed the Great Lakes from Duluth, Minn., to Massena, N.Y. during that time. He returned home to work for Mattila Contracting, and then worked for 30 years as a heavy equipment operator for the Houghton County Road Commission, where he then retired in 1999.

On January 14, 1967, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Battalio.

Bill enjoyed watching old westerns and war movies and spending time at the family cottage on the Hancock Canal. He also loved to cheer on his grandchildren by attending all of their band concerts, softball, football and hockey games for Hancock High School along with the baseball and hockey games for Finlandia University. He also was an avid Detroit Red Wings and Green Bay Packers fan.

Also preceding him in death was his sister, Patricia (Lepisto) Danis.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lepisto of Hancock; his children, Gina "Sissy" Lepisto of Hancock and William M. (Nancy) Lepisto of Hancock; his grandchildren, Brandon (Danielle) Lepisto of Claremont, N.C., Christopher Lepisto, Samantha Lepisto, Brett Lepisto, and Bryan Lepisto, all of Hancock; his sister, Arlene (Dave) Kempainen of Hancock Twp.; his sister-in-law, Stina Wilbur of Hancock Twp.; his brothers-in-law, Michael (Judy) Battalio of Hesperia, Calif., and William Koski of Franklin Twp.; his mother-in-law, June Koski of resident patient of the HCMC Facility; one aunt, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Bill will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. Amy Terhune to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Friends may call on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
