Wolverines split weekend series

January 13, 2014
The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Calumet gave up the first goal but came back with a vengeance to earn a weekend split with the Eagle River Falcons in Great Lakes Hockey League play.

The Wolverines (5-5) got 32 saves from Dylan Whittaker in his first start of the season.

Four defensemen contributed four goals, including a pair from Cody Carlson and one apiece for Justin Reilley, Tyler Froberg and Josh Harju. Josh Frantti and Alex VanWagner also scored for Calumet, which scored four times in the second period to take control of the game.

Friday, Calumet's 2-1 lead at the halfway mark disappeared as four Eagle River goals were too much to overcome. VanWagner and Jim Brey helped the Lions to a 2-1 lead, but after the Falcons jumped ahead 5-2, only Wayne Hyrkas could offer a reply for Calumet.

Ryan Patrick stopped 42 shots.
