The year goes by ... one day at a time

December 31, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

Life can be funny sometimes ... or at least very interesting. But the truth is, things don't change much from one day to the next. One day around here feels pretty much like the next. But when you look back at 365 of those 24-hour blocks all grouped together, it seems like a lot has changed. Friends and loved ones have come and gone into and out of our lives. Families have gotten bigger and smaller. We've developed new favorites and learned to live without some old ones.

As we say good bye to 2013, we also remember many of our friends who left us during the past 365 days. Those who've left an indelible mark on the community. Those such as Jim Dompier, Dorothy Love, Ralph Raffaelli, Jim Ruotsala, and many others who gave so much of their lives for the betterment others, are gone but certainly not forgotten, and have left rich legacies.

In Saturday's edition of The Daily Mining Gazette we'll publish our end of the year special with the year's top stories in news and sports and a look at those special people in the Keweenaw who left us during the past year.

2013 brought about many changes politically and socially and in many cases left questions that need to be answered in 2014.

As we look back on the year past we also wait with anticipation on the year ahead. The completion of construction projects such as DA Glass and the Aspirus Houghton Clinic will certainly be good to see.

And who knows what lies ahead.

What new inventions or innovations that are now just ideas will be part of lives before the next 365 days come around.

We'd like to thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life for the past 365 days, as we have for the previous 154 years. We wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year and look forward to the adventure that awaits us all in 2014.
