HOUGHTON - Superheroes, witches and all manner of creatures will descend upon downtown Houghton Friday for the fifth annual Treat Street.

The safe trick-or-treating night for families will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Shelden Avenue.

For the children's safety, Shelden Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic from Franklin Square to Quincy Street during trick-or-treating. Traffic coming through the downtown can take Lakeshore Drive between those points.

Youngsters in costume go from store to store during the 2010 Treat Street in downtown Houghton. This year’s event is Friday.

Kids can begin at the City Center, where they can pick up free reflective goodie bags along with their first piece of candy. The City Center will also host a haunted house for elementary school children in the basement. Michigan Technological University fraternity and sorority members and Dial Help are assisting in the spookiness.

Treat Street began in 2009 as a way to show off the then-newly completed Shelden Avenue streetscape. Numerous downtown businesses are involved in sponsoring the event.

Houghton Police Lt. Nick Roberts said Treat Street draws "hundreds upon hundreds" of children every year.

"It's right around Halloween time, the kids are excited to get out there to test out their new costumes, they get an extra day of trick-or-treating, and they get to go through a cool haunted house," he said.
