Kings sweep Miners; Hancock, Houghton sweep triangulars

CALUMET - Nine kills with just one error by Loretta Anderson helped Calumet roll to an easy 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-14) non-league volleyball victory over Negaunee Tuesday.

Alisa Storm added five kills, while Carissa Pavolich and Pam Torola added four apiece for the Copper Kings, playing without top performers Lexie Rowe (ankle) and Ellen Twardzik (knee) due to injury.

The Kings also served the Miners tough, putting up 13 aces, five from Catherine Frantti and four from Terilynne Budreau.

Defensively, Megan Yeo had a team-best seven digs, while Morgan Peters and Torola kicked in six each.

Calumet returns to WestPAC play Thursday with a trip to L'Anse.

Houghton 3, L'Anse 0

L'Anse 2, Baraga 1

L'ANSE - Emma Huhta racked up 11 kills to lead Houghton as it swept L'Anse 3-0 (25-23, 25-8, 25-13) in WestPAC play Tuesday as part of a triangular.

Elisa Jurmu added nine kills, while Kenna Farrey led the Gremlins with four aces and 21 assists.

Sydney Dillinger led the defense in both the front and back rows with 21 digs and four blocks. Kayla Jacobson added 20 digs.

In their other triangular match, a 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) win over Baraga, Jurmu had seven kills and 12 digs, Dillinger four kills, three blocks and 10 digs and Farrey posted 14 assists.

Houghton (25-13, 4-1 WestPAC) is in Ishpeming Thursday for a triangular including Superior Central.

In the best-of-three Baraga County rivalry showdown, L'Anse dropped the first set but came back to beat Baraga 14-25, 25-22, 25-11.

Ontonagon 3,

Ewen-Trout Creek 0

ONTONAGON - Ontonagon swept through the second chapter of its county clash with Ewen-Trout Creek Tuesday, 25-17, 25-15, 25-12.

Jenifer Stewart put up seven of her kills in the first set, while Rebecca Karttunen's 10-point serving run with a handful of aces decided the second set. Karttunen finished the match with six kills, while Brooke Turin had five digs and seven assists.

Hancock 2, Dollar Bay 0

West Iron County 2, Dollar Bay 1

Hancock 3, West Iron County 1

HANCOCK - Taylor Mattson's nine kills and 20 digs helped Hancock sweep a home triangular and defeat WestPAC opponent West Iron County in four sets, 25-14, 16-25, 25-16, 25-16.

Nicole Anderson's 26 assists paced the Bulldogs and she helped Allie Berryman and Shannon Anderson to seven kills apiece.

In the non-league match with Dollar Bay, Mattson and Shannon Anderson posted four kills apiece, while both Sydney Lucier and Jen Hannon recorded four aces.

In the other triangular match, WIC edged Dollar Bay two sets to one.

Hancock is off until the Houghton Invitational on Saturday.
