SUTTONS BAY, Mich. - Both Houghton and Hancock went out in the quarterfinals of the Suttons Bay Invitational Saturday.
The Bulldogs, playing without four starters, finished second in their morning pool with wins over Marine City Cardinal Mooney and Grand Traverse Academy. Defensive specialist Sydney Lucier was named to the all-tournament team after amassing 21 digs and four aces for the day.
Houghton also had a 2-1 record in the pool. The Gremlins swept Lake City, won two of three sets with Benzonia Benzie Central and lost 2-1 to Cheboygan.
Just like Hancock, Houghton faced a rematch with Cheboygan and was also unsuccessful, losing 2-0 (25-22, 25-19).
Elisa Jurmu led Houghton's offense with 30 kills. Ashlyn Kero served 10 aces.
Dillinger posted 36 digs to lead Houghton. Kayla Jacobson added 34 and Elisa Jurmu.
Both teams resume with triangulars Tuesday night, Houghton at L'Anse with Baraga and Hancock at home against West Iron County and Dollar Bay.
